Halloween Skull Pillows

Yay! It's Halloween time! And that means I can start decorating! Actually, I pulled out all the decorations a couple weekends ago. If I'm going to put it all up, I want to enjoy for at least a month. Right?!  Check out these cute Skull and Halloween couch pillows I made last year. I'm so excited to bring them out again.

The skulls, haunted house and spider web are made of felt that I found at the dollar store. I was really excited to find these!! I decided to make pillows, or technically, pillow covers for the decorative pillows on the couch. I dug up some black fabric from my fabric stash. I found some really nice thick crepe backed satin. I'm pretty sure it belonged to my sister and somehow over the years it found it's way to me. So not only was it free cause it was in my pile, but doubly free cause I didn't buy it in the first place! Score!

Here's Mr Skull, with his Gold tooth. I decided to make him a gangsta. haha! The pillow covers or couch cushions are made to the same size of the cushions I already have. I have this Ikea cushion  and loved it so much I wanted Halloween themed ones. I used the Ikea one as a pattern and cut around it on the black fabric. The pillows are 22 x 22 inches square. I at first sewed the cushions shut around the pillow forms but then realized I needed to take them out eventually, so I undid the seam/cut them out, took apart 3 sides of the cushion cover and added in a zipper. It was extra work but totally worth it. They look so much more professional with the zipper. I suggest thinking it out before you start.

The felt skull head is sewn on with black thread. I made the gold tooth with gold glitter and glue.

The cute haunted house felt piece was sewn with white thread onto a purple cushion. I found the purple material as well in my fabric stash. As you can see in the picture, I sewed back and forth over it a couple times. It looks a bit more edgy this way. And it stands out more. Just one little line looked too delicate, which didn't really match. The messiness of going over it a couple times looks better.  I then cut out some little bats out of extra black felt I had and placed them randomly around and anchored them by sewing a line down the middle. That way they'd flap their wings.

Here's Mrs Skull. She's pretty kick butt with her metal stud hair bow that's layered onto purple felt. She's sewn down with and outlined in black thread. She has 3 little rows of stitching to look like eyelashes.

The felt spiderweb was pretty small in comparison to the skulls. But it was the only one I could find at the time. I sewed this down with white thread so it would stand out, and drew out some anchoring web lines. I also sewed around in circles quite a few times to fill in the middle. For the spider, I cut out a spider shape from extra fabric and sewed that down. Then I covered it with the same gold glitter glue like Mr Skull's tooth.

Here's another shot of a couple of these pillows. the white shag one is from Ikea.  My sisters found this vintage red velvet couch next to their apartment dumpster years ago and called me to run over and get it. They sat on it until I got there. I love it! It's beautiful.

I'm still working on the wall display above the couch. I've rearranged it a couple times. My sister brought over some new signs recently. I'll be talking about the wall in a future post so stay tuned!

I threw purple Halloween lace over the lampshades. The Halloween lace has little spiderwebs all over it.

Happy Halloween everyone!
