Happy Halloween everyone!
I'm excited to show you Aimee's Barbie head transformation to our newest creepy zombie! She lends just the right amount of creep to all of our cute and fun Halloween decorations. We got the idea to make her from fartsandcraftsroom.wordpress.com
Thank you for the awesome Halloween inspiration and wonderful ideas!
Read on, and enjoy the photo montage of Barbie's make-under.
Don't you just love Pinterest? I can be on there for hours. One day, I ran across a pin, this wonderful blog picture, by fartsandcraftsroom.wordpress.com under all the Halloween crafts.
So CREEPY! I LOVE it!! I really love the black feathers in the hair too!
Of course I instantly wanted to make my own! Who wouldn't?
(Just a note about Farts and Crafts Room; Sadly, I can't find anything by them that's more recent than 2012. So if anyone finds her new blog/website, let me know! The stuff she did post back then was funny! I would love to follow her now.)
Good thing I already had a Barbie head laying around from last Halloween that I tried to spookify. That was a big fail. More like, I just tarted her up a bit. (adding more eyeliner, dark red lipstick, changing the baby pink top to purple, and smudging up her forehead and shoulder like she's been rolling around in the dirt doesn't scream scary at all.)
Anyway.. Aimee decided to be in charge of Barbie's zombie make over, or shall we say, make-under.
Here's our Before shot, our Barbie head alongside our inspiration pin. Aimee has her work cut out for her!
The first thing Aimee did was put Barbie's hair into a ponytail. (We're getting serious now! lol )
Aimee decided where the neckline of the dress would be, and drew a line with a sharpie to designate which part was what. Then she painted all the skin a light grey.
Looks like Barbie's ready for her spa treatment!
I just love this new clay mask! |
Aimee is working on smudging the eyes, making them bigger. She has black paint on her finger and is going around the eye area, dabbing it on.
Just think about how you look when using eye makeup remover, how it's a HUGE mess of black around your eyes. That's what we're going for here.
Starting to look good!
We decided the lips looked fine. The beauty mark is just a accidental drop of paint. Cool, huh? Both Aimee and I weren't overly fond of the original/inspiration's creepy Joker mouth that's extended on either side of her face. That's just a bit too much for us. Maybe our zombie is really a vampire?
To make the dripping blood effect we mixed in some water with the paint, then drew a line of paint around the neck with a really loaded brush (loaded with paint so it'll drip all over.) The more loaded/paint on your brush, the bigger and longer the paint / blood drips will be. If your brush is slightly dry, you'll need to coax the drips along.
There were a couple drips in the back Aimee "helped" along.
Barbie was looking great! But it was just boring ol' grey and black. It needed a punch of red. It is supposed to be RED blood, not just black. So Aimee went to town with the red paint. It's not a straight red from the tube, but mixed up with a little black, to darken it up.
Then she decided it was too clean and pretty looking,so she dabbed black paint randomly all over. If you're going for true zombie moldy look, a hint of green sponged on here and there would look terrific too.
My contribution to the transformation was the little white dots on the eyes. They totally bump up the creep factor, right!? In case you're wondering how, It's a oval shaped spot, with a littler dot to the side. (It creates a shiny eye reflection, like it's alive; instead of flat black.) Don't worry about messing up. It's going to look fine next to those flickering candles no matter what you do!
The Original has some ripped, open weave fabric around the neckline, with a big jewel in the middle, kinda like a necklace. In the above picture, we were trying out a bit of the Halloween cheesecloth like fabric. I do like the idea of a trim on the neckline. This helps to differentiate the neckline, as well as make it not so flat. The cheesecloth fabric wasn't quite right, so we used a bit of stretchy black velvet instead. We just hot glued down. Easy Peesy. I like our velvet trim way better.
Then for the final touches. Aimee spent some time fixing the hair. Teasing it and spraying it with tons of hairspray. Dang. Sometimes I wish my hair would stay that big all day!
Here's a After shot. What do you think? I think Aimee did a fine job making this fun Halloween transformation! Are you ready to make your own now? :)
You know what every zombie barbie, needs? Spiders in her hair! That's totally the finishing touch!
Here's the official location spot for our Creepy Barbie head, on top of the desk lamp. In the corner to the right, out of view, is the Jason hockey mask on a wig head. Not creepy at all. :) Gotta keep the creeps cornered into one area.
Here are some more views of our creepy Barbie head.
Enjoy!
We had so much fun making this. Now I'm looking at everything, wondering what next I can turn into Halloweentown :)
I'm happy to say that "I nailed it!" Not in the Pinterest Fail way that are funny and sad, but I think we really nailed it.
Speaking of nails... isn't there a scary movie character, with nails sticking out all over his face? That might work really well here..... aaaaggggh! Too scary for me. that's for sure!
Hugs!
Caroline
